Exploring Simulation Catalogues Online

In collaboration with scientists at the MPA, GAVO has created a number of online services for exploring the results of computer simulations of large scale structure formation in the universe. Currently two types of services are made available, both aimed at exploring the result of cosmological N-body simulations.

The first type uses relational database technology for exploring post-processing results of a dark matter simulation. These are the halo catalogues, organized in merger trees and synthetic galaxy catalogues created using semi-analytical galaxy formation techniques. We have created a web interface for querying these catalogue using the standard relational query language SQL, similar to the the query service provided for the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The database has been structured in such a way to enable efficient extraction of merger histories.

Secondly we have created a web interface around the MoMaF tool described in Blaizot et al (2003) and adjusted for working on the halo catalogue from the milli-Millennium simulatyion by Jeremy Blaizot. Note that the GalICS team has built services similar to this as well as the query service on their site.

We have momentarily three web interfaces for accessing these results, one of which will be deprecated.

    Public, limited access to the milli-Millennium simulation and galaxy catalogues form both MPA and Durham ICC
  • MyMillennium
    Private access to the full Millennium simulation and galaxy catalogues form both MPA and Durham ICC.
