VO Course at the Heidelberg Student Days 2013 of the Department of Physics and Astronomy

Introduction to the Virtual Observatory

Ground-based and space observatories keep collecting huge amounts of astronomical data in the form of images, spectra and catalogues for all kind of astronomical objects. These are completed by computer simulations such as of the large scale structure of the universe. The Virtual Observatory (VO) not only allows to easily discover, access and use these data but also provides software to visualize and analyse it.

This introduction to the Virtual Observatory will guide every participant through hands-on sessions to get accustomed to Virtual Observatory tools so that they can use them efficiently for their own study of interest. Real astrophysical examples and scientific applications will allow participants to become familiar with the VO capabilities on their own laptops.

Hence we encourage everyone to bring his/her own laptop.
